Current PhD Students

I am fortunate to supervise and co-supervise exceptional doctoral candidates whose research contributes to causal inference, entrepreneurial experimentation, and game theory.

Honours Programme and Bachelor Thesis Research (BTR)

Maastricht University offers excellence and honours programmes for the top 5% talented students seeking an extra challenge. These include three Honours Colleges with selective bachelor's programmes, faculty-specific programmes for bachelor's students, and university-wide programmes for bachelor's and master's students. Since 2019, I've had the privilege of supervising one Honours+ team annually, with three teams winning the research contest. I regularly supervise Bachelor Thesis Research (BTR) at the Faculty for Engineering Sciences (FSE).

Masters and Undergraduate Students

For current students, we are assigned about 14 Master theses and 10 Bachelor theses per academic year. It is necessary to take the thesis Skills courses to have a solid foundation for quantitative/experimental work. During your thesis circle, we'll typically have four individual meetings. If you feel like you already have significant research experience, or an interesting dataset, please explain what you've done.

I primarily supervise experimental work and machine learning applications in entrepreneurship and strategy. That being said, you can also consider causal ML approaches for business decisions and outcomes, network analysis, or natural language processing as well. I'm open to related projects where my methodological background could add value as a supervisor. Feel free to reach out if your research interests align with these areas. Interested students should apply through the annual thesis supervision request. In case, you can let me know if you have stated your preferences.

PhD students

I currently supervise or co-supervise three PhD students. Due to limited capacity, I am currently not looking for new PhD students. However, if you are a current Master student and considering a PhD in 1–2 years from now, you can feel free to contact me. PhD and PostDoc positions usually depend on external funding, proactive candidates can apply for opportunities through Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions Funded positions are usually announced via Maastricht University.

For prospective PhDs, I especially value students with strong experimental, computational backgrounds and some social science experience. While there are no set criteria, you'll strengthen your application by contacting me (or having your advisor do so) to discuss your interests and goals. PhD supervision requires significant investment of time and resources, so we select students for our research group carefully.

If you're a current PhD student outside my department or university, I'm open to collaborations. The interdisciplinary environment at Maastricht University is one of its strengths, and I'm potentially open to co-supervising projects where there's a good fit. At best, bring your current supervisor into the loop. Regardless, I'd love to hear from you and you're always welcome to attend our meetings.

Postdocs

I'd be delighted to work with talented researchers, though positions depend on available funding. For instance, PostDoc positions can be enabled via the NWO Talent Programme. If you believe your research interests and expertise align with our work, please send me an email explaining why you'd be a strong fit for the lab. I'm always interested in exploring possibilities with exceptional candidates.

Currently, we don't have open postdoc positions. However, if you have secured your own funding (fellowships, grants, or other support), or aspire to do so, that opens up immediate opportunities. In that case, please reach out and we can discuss how to move forward. Strong candidates sometimes help inspire creative funding solutions.

Non-PhD / External Students not at Maastricht University

I unfortunately rarely work with undergraduates or master students who are not physically in Maastricht. I still get emails from external students asking if we could together on something remotely and I really would love to, but my priority is to advise the current students at UM given the limited bandwith I have for advising. Your best bet to work with me is to get admitted to one of our programs and then drop me an email.
